Purpose:
Perform proper inspection, maintenance, and repair of transportation equipment to insure safe and compliant operation.
Essential Functions:
• Diagnose problems related to engine, drive train, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems, lift gates, and refrigeration.
• Tear down, repair and re-assemble air brakes, engine and drive train related parts, suspensions, lift gates, etc.
• Tune up diesel and gasoline engines, utilize diagnostic equipment, to include laptop and software for Cummins, Detroit, Carrier, and anti-lock brake systems
• Disassemble, repair and re-assemble tractor and trailer suspension components
• Check out, service and repair tractor air conditioning
• Remove and replace tractor clutch, transmission and rear end.
• Inspect, remove and replace defective steering components.
• Inspect, diagnose problems remove, and replace vehicle coupling systems, (Fifth Wheel).
• Perform BIT, T-1, PMB services, and other routine equipment maintenance as required
• Accurately record all parts used for parts/supplies inventory control, charge out, and re-order
• Keep accurate records of preventive maintenance and all other work performed.
• Communicate with foreman/superintendent and/or supervisor daily of changes or problems with transportation equipment and/or assigned job
• Maintain clean/safe work area and adhere to all company health and safety policies, and best maintenance practices guidelines.
Job Requirements:
Education/ Certifications/or Equivalent combination of education training and experience:
• Ability to operate electronic (laptop based) diagnostic programs, Insite, DDEC, Navistar etc.
• Must have some reefer experience.
• EGR and emission systems experience a plus.
• Good Judgement is required for this position as there may be times when direct supervision may not be available.
Experience:
• Must have your own complete Journeyman toolbox of hand tools.
•Three to five years on-the-job experience or graduate of an accredited trade school or military training program.
• Have Cummins & Detroit engine tune-up experience, overhaul experience a plus. (Cummins 855, ISM, M11, ISB, and Detroit 60 series).
• Must have knowledge of D.O.T. wiring and air systems.
• Must be certified with the State of California in air conditioning Freon recovery systems.
• Must have experience with HD tractor/trailer suspension and steering components operation and repair.
• Must have experience with HD running gear and driveline components operation and repair.
• Operate Palm Pilot (electronic work order) for job activity tracking.
• Must be certified in air brakes, including ABS trained.
• Must have full knowledge of CHP/BIT inspections and servicing
• Must have knowledge of RTA and computer-based email, word and excel

Compensation:
UNFI anticipates paying the above-referenced pay rate (or within the above-referenced pay range) for this position. Actual Pay, where applicable, will depend on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and any requirements under applicable collective bargaining agreements. Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
