Position Purpose:
As a Refrigeration Technician, you will specialize in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of refrigerated trailer units (reefer units), ensuring all temperature‑controlled equipment is safe, compliant, and ready for daily operations. You may support general trailer repair as needed but will primarily focus on refrigeration systems including Thermo King, Carrier, and electric/engine‑driven TRUs.
Essential Functions
- Perform preventive maintenance and required inspections on refrigerated trailers
- Diagnose, repair, and rebuild refrigeration systems, including compressors, evaporators, condensers, belts, hoses, and cooling components
- Conduct electrical and electronic diagnostics on reefer control systems
- Troubleshoot and repair start‑up, shutdown, temperature control, and alarm faults
- Perform refrigerant recovery, charging, and leak detection in compliance with EPA requirements
- Diagnose and repair diesel/electric reefer engines, fuel systems, and emissions‑related components
- Maintain accurate work documentation in the RTA Maintenance Program
- Support general trailer work (brakes, doors, suspensions) as needed
- Collaborate with Fleet and Operations teams to ensure equipment readiness
- Continue developing advanced diagnostic and refrigeration troubleshooting skills
Job Requirements
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in transport refrigeration, diesel reefer systems, HVAC, or heavy‑duty equipment diagnostics
- Technical school training in HVAC/R or diesel preferred
- Certifications:
- EPA 608 or 609 Certification strongly preferred
- FHWA, HVAC, or reefer OEM certifications a plus
- Tools:
- Must provide own hand tools; specialty tools provided by UNFI
- Driving:
- Ability to move equipment on-site preferred (Class A not required but beneficial)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong working knowledge of Thermo King, Carrier, or comparable reefer systems
- Ability to perform refrigeration repairs with minimal supervision
- Skilled in electrical troubleshooting and reading wiring diagrams
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work independently
- Clear understanding of safety procedures and compliance standards
- Valid driver’s license; must be 21 years or older
Physical Environment / Demands:
- Regularly required to stand, climb, bend, and use hands for mechanical tasks
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in tight spaces or elevated areas
- Exposure to ambient temperatures ranging from 20°F to 90°F
- Manual dexterity required for small-part and system repair work

UNFI anticipates paying the above-referenced pay rate (or within the above-referenced pay range) for this position. Actual Pay, where applicable, will depend on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and any requirements under applicable collective bargaining agreements. Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
