While providing on-site support for our 50+ distribution centers, our HR Operations team ensures effective execution of human resources strategies in areas such as Talent Development, Workforce Planning, Talent Selection, Engagement, Recognition, Performance Management, Organizational Development, Training, Associate Relations, Compensation, Benefits, Wellness, Risk Safety, Labor Relations, Sustainability, and Philanthropy.  In addition, this team plays a pivotal role in our current transformation journey.  They are instrumental in helping to develop and retain the right talent, who are fully engaged with this strategy, as well as embodying a true “people first” mindset to help drive UNFI’s company culture of collaboration and engagement. 

Purpose:

To complete a variety of payroll clerical duties in accordance with standard procedures. Responsible for overall online and manual payroll processing of an operating division.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs weekly online detailing of payroll for individual units in the assigned division and other divisions as needed.

  • Calculates and processes special payments.

  • Resolves routine payroll problems.

  • Ensures proper calculation and payment of sick pay, vacation pay, retro pay, and termination pay.

  • Notifies stores by email of any pay adjustments or missing forms.

  • Maintains the vacation/sick status report and the experience hours report to ensure an accurate special hours report at the store level.

  • Prepares labor report adjustments for any general journal entries and other miscellaneous adjustments.

  • Processes all forms and proper electronic transmissions as necessary in a timely manner.

  • Performs other job duties as required.

Education/Certification 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, some college coursework preferred.

Experience

  • 0-2 years of experience in payroll, benefits, or related administrative work.

  • Basic computer skills; familiarity with HR systems a plus.

  • Possess a basic understanding of accounting and payroll principles and the procedures, terminology, and practices involved.

  • Position requires use of calculators, online computer terminals, telephones, and other office equipment.

  • Prior experience with online CRT computer environment helpful.

Knowledge Skills/Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.

  • Ability to follow instructions, established procedures, and meet deadlines.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Possess good math skills and figure aptitude.

  • Work requires knowledge of the policies and procedures of the office or function.

  • Good judgment is required for this position as there may be times when direct supervision may not be immediately available.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/DEMANDS:

Onsite Role:

  • This position requires the associate to perform all duties at one of our UNFI locations, such as a distribution center or office.

  • Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment.

  • Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at the desk or computer terminal.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.

  • Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment during the normal workday.

  • Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in the completion of job duties.

Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
