PURPOSE: The Safety Programs Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of all of UNFI’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs, projects and analytics. Building a compelling case for change while maintaining excellent relationships with various stakeholders at all levels of management as well as external partners to support EHS objectives. Supported through a team of EHS Directors, Managers, and Partners.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Development and maintenance of an EHS management system:

o   Lead a team with the development of standardized safety systems, policies, training, safety campaigns and programs to reduce corporate and human capital risk, and ensure compliance with federal, state/provincial, and municipal laws

o   Conduct internal site audits and develop reports on EHS program performance and tactical and strategic improvement planning

o   Support external audits and progression of create report on findings to present to leadership

o   Analyze EHS metrics and performance indicators to identify trends for continuous improvement and corrective measures

·       Project lead for various initiatives (programs, technology solutions, training courses and campaigns)

·       Oversee the coordination and compilation of key performance indicators (KPIs) and the development of reports and scorecards for leadership. Analyze trends that increase injury and accident frequency/severity

·       Partner and collaborate with business and support functions to influence and manage EHS resources, projects, and business decisions

·       Create a network of internal and external alliances to develop and implement EHS policies, programs, procedures, standards, training, and processes

·       Drive the continued development of a “world class” safety culture by assessing, monitoring, and developing culture[1]specific initiatives and engaging stakeholders at all levels of the organization

·       Leads data sets and reports related to EHS. These functions include planning, analyzing, preparing, managing and evaluating EHS outcomes

·       Coordinate EHS campaigns and produce EHS communications material including memos and guidance documents

·       Actively support and mentor EHS partners in best practices and promote standardization of methods and tools

·       Review current EHS processes and find opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiency

·       Oversight of partnership with external provider for Workers compensation program

·       Performs other relevant job duties as required

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education/ Certifications: (Required & Preferred)

·       Bachelor’s degree with major course work in EHS, risk management safety/industrial/quality/ environmental engineering or a closely related field is required

·       Certified Safety Profession (CSP) preferred

·       Project management Professional (PMP) is highly valued

Experience:

·       7+ years of progressive EHS program management experience with large national or multi-national companies with multiple sites

·       Experience actively working with stakeholders at all levels of the organization to strategically solve problems, manage projects, drive performance while maintaining long-term strategies

Knowledge:

·       Strong background in and knowledge of multiple country requirements and industry standards/best practices (i.e., acts, regulations, codes, standards, and case law)

Skills/ Abilities:

·       Fluency in Spanish is highly valued

·       Proven ability to develop and present business plans and strategies to influence company decision makers

·       Ability to coordinate planning and collaboration with other business functions in a way that is mutually beneficial and drives continuous improvement

·       Ability to drive a strong safety philosophy and implement programs designed to effectively change behavior and prevent injury using data- and research-driven methods

·       Ability to analyze and independently resolve a variety of difficult situations and problems using timely decision making

·       Good judgment is required for this position as there may be times when direct supervision may not be immediately available

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/ DEMANDS:

·       Travel required up to 25%

·       Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment

·       Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at desk or computer terminal

·       While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear

·       Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone and other office equipment in the course of normal workday

UNFI anticipates paying the above-referenced pay rate (or within the above-referenced pay range) for this position. Actual Pay, where applicable, will depend on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and any requirements under applicable collective bargaining agreements. Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
