Purpose:
Manages the Indirect tax team and drives continuous improvement in the processes for payment and reporting of sales and use, excise and property taxes. Assists audit team on all facets of Indirect tax audits. Conducts internal reviews of proper taxation of transactions. Reviews SOP to ensure they are being followed to minimize risk to the Company. Implements Vertex software solution as part of ERP upgrade for the Company. Reviews accounting for indirect taxes. Partners with business teams and represent Indirect tax on special projects. Mentors and develops tax staff.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide leadership within the indirect tax functions of sales/use, excise and property taxes.
Build a deep understanding of the end-to-end tax accounting work and act as a liaison with the accounting team.
Executes accurate and timely accounting entries for the Company’s fiscal and period end closings.
Owns the internal controls and processes within indirect tax.
Assist with the indirect tax audit function in responding to IDR’s from state tax authorities from planning to completion to ensure conformity with all laws and regulations.
Oversee the property tax audits including determining audit processes and assembling and analyzing work papers.
Present, explain, and verify property audit findings as well as make recommendations to reduce tax liabilities and/or increase tax refund possibilities.
Evaluate and advise on purchase and sales transaction taxes with a thorough understanding of tax laws and the business operations.
Perform reverse audits to identify and claim potential tax refunds and provide suggestions for improvement to the tax accrual/payment process.
Communicate with taxing jurisdictions, vendors, and other departments on their sales/use tax questions and resolve potential liability issues.
Understand product and services taxability, tax resale/exemption certificate and license rules by jurisdiction and provide tax advice and guidance.
Actively research changes in laws/regulations on product taxability, tax resale/exemption certificate and license rules by jurisdiction.
Oversee resale certificate compliance for the Company from vendors and provide resale certificates as needed to suppliers
Implement Vertex as part of the ERP implementation for the Company
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education/Certifications:
Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting
CPA in good standing
Master’s in accounting or Tax a plus
Experience:
Previous extensive indirect tax experience required (10 years+), with audit experience
Must have prior advanced experience with personal computer spreadsheets, database, and document preparation applications
Must have prior staff oversight experience within a publicly traded company
Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:
Possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Must be able to prepare researched documentation to substantiate a position and present it in an appropriate manner to outside parties
Possess ability to develop and maintain contacts/relationships throughout enterprise to achieve desired results
Detail-oriented, able to work on competing priorities, and must thrive in a fast-paced work environment
A high degree of initiative and self-motivation
Good judgment is required for this position as there may be times when direct supervision may not be immediately available.
Work Environment:
Remote Role
This position is classified as remote where the associate will perform remote work from their primary residence. Remote associates are welcome to work from the office but are not required to do so. While remote associates are not required to work from an office on a regular basis, they may be required to come to the office or other UNFI locations for necessary business reasons or if directed to do so by their manager.

This position may require the associate to travel to company offices, distribution centers, or other locations for specific meetings or other business reasons.

Compensation:
UNFI anticipates paying the above-referenced pay rate (or within the above-referenced pay range) for this position. Actual Pay, where applicable, will depend on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and any requirements under applicable collective bargaining agreements. Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
