Purpose:
Assist in making UNFI the best place to work and invest in by developing and implementing programs that provide a safe and secure environment for associates and company assets. This is accomplished by ensuring we have Asset Protection and security policies in place to protect employees as well as managing shrink due to theft, fraud, damage resulting from carelessness or disregard through the use of policies and technology, and existing resources. Develops, publishes, and enforces company-wide asset protection and security policies and procedures to safeguard company employees, visitors, and assets for UNFI. This role will be a key leader collaborating closely with Wholesale Region and HR Operational Leaders.
Job Responsibilities:
Strategic Direction- 30%
- Provides recommendations to reduce or eliminate risk exposure; participates in security planning for company events (warehouse, office, and transportation environments).
- Keeps informed and current on Asset Protection issues that could impact the Company and educate operational staff. These issues could include freight and inventory control initiatives, cargo theft, the Bio-terrorism Act of 2002, FDA 2003-2004 regulations, Food Safety and Security, etc.
- Participates in the development and readiness of Emergency Action Plans for each Company facility.
- Using knowledge of the security industry, develops, publishes, and enforces company-wide security policies and procedures to safeguard company funds, employees, and property due to theft, vandalism, or disaster. This will include the corporate security plan and program, audits, standard operating procedures(SOPs), manuals, policies, budget, and fiscal initiative planning.
- Implement Corporate Asset Protection Strategies.
- Development and implement strategies to mitigate losses and reduce shrink.
- Development programs and processes that protect our associates, contractors, and company assets against theft and other illegal activities.
- Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of strategic programs and recommend processes and changes to make them more efficient.
Investigations- 25%
- Interfaces with law enforcement agencies and industrial associations (all levels), to investigate company losses, recover property, determine causes, and maintain the current level of awareness.
- Monitors investigations to identify common problems and develops steps to prevent recurrence. Develops and publishes regular reports to management to generate awareness of Asset Protection activities and accomplishments.
- Ensure that all Asset Protection investigations are conducted in a timely and thorough manner.
- Direct investigations of a sensitive nature as appropriate
Partnerships-15%
- Communicate and partner with the Operations and HR leaders. Communicate and partner with Legal Department and Communications as needed.
- Provide asset protection support to Distribution Centers and other company facilities as designated.
- Act as the company’s liaison with Government Agencies and Law Enforcement Agencies.
Training-15%
- Assess training needs within the Company and develop programs to bridge any training gaps.
Administration-10%
- Ensure AP Managers are supported in the identification, acquisition, and installation of asset protection/security equipment at each company location. This equipment could include CCTV cameras and monitors, alarm systems, electronic door access control, and other technology to protect assets and employees.
- Assist in the development and management of the cost center budget.
People Development- 5%
- Provides day-to-day support for Asset Protection and Corporate Security issues including incidents and investigations. Gives direction to AP Managers about strategic initiatives aimed at reducing theft, shrinking, and maintaining a safe environment that provides a high level of security to Company assets and employees.
- Partners with Strategic Sourcing to select contract guard service at company locations. Establishes expectations, negotiates service contracts, and ensures enforcement of standards to enable the protection of our people, product, and property.
- Recruit and hire Asset Protection Managers and Asset Protection Partners as needed.
Job Requirements:
Education/ Certifications:
- Position requires a bachelor’s degree. In the absence of formal education, significant and directly related work experience may be substituted.
- Certification in Interviewing and Interrogation techniques preferred.
Experience:
- 8-10 years of experience as an Asset Protection manager or related field of management experience.
- Experience and knowledge around threat assessment desirable.
Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:
- Must be able to work closely with Operations, Human Resources, and various departments within the Legal Department and possess the ability to exercise positive influence without having direct authority.
- Thorough knowledge of industrial security practices and technology, including closed-circuit television and other electronic systems; knowledge of personal computers and associated business software (Microsoft Word and Excel preferred).
- Demonstrated competency in the application of the concepts of delegation, empowerment, completed work, and building morale in small groups.
- The ability to manage effectively, through delegation, multiple projects and complex investigations involving different work teams, at several locations at the same time.
- The ability to lead and command in the absence of higher authority and to work largely without supervision.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the political realities of large organizations and how to maneuver effectively within them.
- A strong customer service orientation.
- Demonstrated ability to form cooperative work arrangements with groups outside Asset Protection and outside the company.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to present complex material to executive-level individuals in a concise and professional manner.
- Advanced investigative ability including experience carrying a caseload, conducting complex investigations, interview techniques, and preparing cases for higher review (such as a district attorney or corporate attorney).
- Ability to project a professional corporate image in appearance, demeanor, and attitude.
Physical Environment/Demands:
- Must be able to travel, including overnight travel up to 50% of total work schedule.
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time at meetings or in an office work setting.
- Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time when visiting distribution or retail facilities.

Compensation:
UNFI anticipates paying the above-referenced pay rate (or within the above-referenced pay range) for this position. Actual Pay, where applicable, will depend on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and any requirements under applicable collective bargaining agreements. Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
