Job Overview: 
This position is a role supporting the Director of Indirect Tax with activities including but not limited to the filing and review of monthly state cigarette and tobacco excise tax returns, coordinating approval and initiating tax payments, reviewing journal entries and account reconciliations, and assisting with audit defense activities related to cigarette and tobacco excise tax audits.  The position will also assist with indirect tax projects including but not limited to sales tax refund claim filings, sales tax exemption certificate management and supporting the tax department with various projects on an ad hoc basis.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • (10%) Accurately complete and timely file applicable monthly state excise tax returns and reports.  Make appropriate and timely payments as required and maintain complete documentation and backup.    
  • (20%) Reviewing monthly state excise tax returns and reports completed by analysts to ensure accurate and timely filing of returns by analysts.    
  • (10%) Review balances sheet account reconciliations monthly for assigned state excise tax accounts.    
  • (10%) Assist with audit defense activities related to cigarette and tobacco excise tax audits.    
  • (30%) Preparing indirect tax refund claims and supporting documentation.    
  • (10%) Collecting sales tax exemption certificates from customers and indexing them for future audits.    
  • (10%) Support members of the Corporate Tax Group with other tax-related projects as assigned.    

Job Requirements: 
Education/ Certifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university; CPA or advanced degree preferred.

Experience: 

  • Minimum 3 years of tax experience in a public accounting firm or 5 years of in-house corporate tax experience.
  • Strong tax compliance background (excise tax a plus).
  • Experience with federal and/or state audits.
     

Skills/ Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong tax research and writing skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Excel skills required.
  • Experience using analytical tools such as Alteryx is preferred.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for working with multiple IT software tools.
  • Experience with excise tax compliance a plus, but not required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships throughout the UNFI organization and with external auditors.
  • Ability to take initiative while seeking appropriate mentorship.

Work Environment: 

  • Remote Role: 
    This position is classified as remote where the associate will perform remote work from their primary residence. Remote associates are welcome to work from the office but are not required to do so. While remote associates are not required to work from an office on a regular basis, they may be required to come to the office or other UNFI locations for necessary business reasons or if directed to do so by their manager.


Travel (minor): 
This position may require the associate to travel to company offices, distribution centers, or other locations for specific meetings or other business reasons.
