Job Overview:
Responsible for the establishment and implementation of promotions to increase Fresh sales. Provide product training to the Sales Department and manage Fresh sales to meet budgeted goals. Coordinates all buying activities to ensure achievement of all department, distribution center, and company financial objectives. Ensures that the highest standards of professional integrity are maintained throughout the assigned department.
Job Responsibilities:
· Establish and lead an effective Purchasing Team through effective recruitment, selection, training, and coaching.
· Identify ways to inspire a drive for process improvement in each staff member through performance management and career planning, by effectively communicating and executing individual and team goals
· Meet with retail accounts to discuss fresh needs and concerns.
· Manage purchasing to meet departmental purchasing goals including managing out-of-stock and shrink
· Meet with vendors/brokers to set up promotions/programs, discuss new products, and review the performance of existing lines. Maintain positive relationships with manufacturers and brokers.
· Decide on new product lines and an overall mix of product offerings.
· Maintain customer rebate program and approve credits from vendor accounts.
· Perform duties in accordance with HACCP and Safe Quality Food (SQF) policies and procedures, as appropriate for location.
· Monitor the mix and programs of the competition and perform price comparisons.
· Participates in developing and managing Division P & L by conducting analysis and providing relevant procurement data.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education/ Certifications:
· BA/BS degree or equivalent.
Experience:
· 5+ years of purchasing experience with 3+ years in a management role. Previous supervisory experience desired.
Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities
· Working knowledge of procurement, logistics, inventory management, marketing, accounting, and financial management practices.
· Knowledge of the perishable and/or produce industry required.
· Previous buyer (preferably food industry) experiences where an understanding of the techniques and methodology have been gained.
· Knowledge/experience with organics is highly desired.
· Interpersonal and customer relation skills to effectively develop and maintain business relationships at all levels of the company and with the outside business community.
· Strong written & verbal communication skills.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to make appropriate decisions.
· Strong planning, organizing, and negotiating skills.
· Proficient in the use of computers and related office software programs, typically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
· Understanding of category business planning process.
· Good judgment is required for this position as there may be times when direct supervision may not be immediately available.
Work Environment:
Remote Role:
· This position is classified as remote where the associate will perform remote work from their primary residence. Remote associates are welcome to work from the office but are not required to do so. While remote associates are not required to work from an office on a regular basis, they may be required to come to the office or other UNFI locations for necessary business reasons or if directed to do so by their manager.
Travel (minor):
· This position may require the associate to travel to company offices, distribution centers, or other locations for specific meetings or other business reasons.

· Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment.
· Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at a desk or computer terminal.
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
· Incumbents may use calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment in the course of a normal workday.
· Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in the completion of job duties.

Compensation:
UNFI anticipates paying the above-referenced pay rate (or within the above-referenced pay range) for this position. Actual Pay, where applicable, will depend on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and any requirements under applicable collective bargaining agreements. Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
