Purpose:   

Primary purpose is to manage Labor Management Systems (LMS) maintenance, LMS Engineered Labor Standard (ELS) changes, and system design. Will lead all process engineering activities and establish a process improvement discipline in support of warehouse operations. Will work with the Operations team in distribution centers across the company to improve efficiency, maintain labor standards, and reduce costs. Expertise will be used to develop and implement national/regional projects and strategies.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Own the testing, documentation, and successful installation of required ELS modifications and/or designs in LMS

  • Develop and manage communication plans to facilitate the approval alignment and implementation with the operation teams for all ELS LMS installations

  • Responsible for all coordination and collaboration with both internal IT and WMS/LMS vendors

  • Train Industrial Engineer team to become subject matter experts in all UNFI LMS

  • Streamline processes related to LMS conversions, upgrades, and maintenance through tool creation and SOPs

  • Acts as primary backup to Director of Industrial Engineering on an as needed basis

  • Partner with Operations Management to drive safety, quality, productivity, utilization, and efficiency of the work force

  • Identify operational bottlenecks and develop, analyze, and present solutions

  • Recommend and implement continuous improvement initiatives based on economic risk analysis and return on investment calculations

  • Development of labor standards utilizing MOST and stopwatch studies; document labor standard data and maintain the integrity of values in LMS (Labor Management System); Ensure engineered labor standards are fair and attainable

  • Document process changes and update SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) as needed

  • Educate operations staff on lean principles; work sampling, root cause analysis, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives; Train front-line employees on the basics of labor standards; Train operations staff on the development and maintenance of labor standards

  • Analyze work force staffing, facility layout, and operational data such as process flow charts, supply chain costs, and distribution schedules, to determine efficient utilization of workers and equipment

  • Conduct ergonomics evaluations: recommend and implement improvements to work area designs

  • Develop and maintain key performance indicator charts/graphs

  • Identify capacity impacts to distribution centers associated with varying parameters within the supply chain

  • Establish engineered labor standards using MOST, full cycle frequency studies across all operational processes

  • Assist the distribution, transportation, and supply chain management team in developing long-term sustainable competitive-advantage strategies that align with and support the business objectives

  • Perform duties in accordance with Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Safe Quality Food (SQF) policies and procedures, as appropriate for location

Job Requirements: 

Education/ Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or equivalent college training and experience

  • MOST or comparable pre-determined time motion system

Experience:

  • 5-7 years relevant work experience required

  • Industrial engineering experience conducting time studies, process improvements, and network optimizations

  • Previous experience with distribution planning models (staffing, productivity, capacity planning etc.)

  • Demonstrated accomplishment in strategic rationalization of distribution network footprint, automation concepts relating to eliminating manual tasks, experience with transportation operation concepts.

Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Transportation Management Systems (TMS)

  • Demonstrate intermediate warehouse operations knowledge at the functional level of detail

Skills/Abilities:

  • MS Office Suite with strong MS Excel and PowerPoint skills, MS Access, Visio, and AutoCAD

  • Ability to take ideas from concept to implementation and influence decision making with all stakeholders

  • Ability to drive process improvements and work within a team to resolve problems

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple and concurrent priorities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, professional attitude, and approach with ability to interact with individuals at various levels of the organization

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a dynamic environment

  • Project Management / Leadership skills a plus

  • Good judgment is required for this position as there may be times when direct supervision may not be immediately available.

  • Travel required 50-75%

Sales Positions Only: For sales positions that are commission-based, the above range is an estimate of total potential commission-based compensation during an associate’s first year, but UNFI offers an introductory period minimum of $680 per week. After the introductory period, as a 100% commission-based role, there is no set salary. UNFI’s commission plans are uncapped and average earnings vary depending on territory and sales achieved, among other factors.
